I know it isnt about rat terriers but I need all the help I can get. River my 1 1/2 year old australian shepherd(not spayed yet but will be very soon.) I have been struggling with her with a dominance issue every since she was little. I started the NILIF program and it helped alot but she is still dominate toward me. TRIES to do what she wants and will growl and snap, sometimes bite me when I make her do what ever. If she runs under the bed before I can catch her and I have to pull her out then she tries to bite me. When around other dogs she is very jealous and if I push her away she will turn around and try to bite meanyone have any suggestions?

thanks for the article. I think it is a matter of not getting her enough exercise. It is so hard to walk her now since it is so hot. Not two long ago I brought two water bottles with me instead of just one and I had to dump both of them on her before we were able to get home.

Nat, Max can be the same way! I am having the hardest time teaching him a simple 'down' because he doesn't want to assume a submissive position. Right now I leave a four foot leash on him all the time (when we are home that is) and when he wont come or get off the couch I can gently make him do it without physically touching him and putting my hand in biting range. When he does come/get of the couch, etc. I give him lots of praise. He doesn't sound as bad about it as River, but he will growl and sometimes snap (he hasn't bitten anyone yet, thankfully.) BTW what's the NILIF program...it sounds familiar to me but I can't place it?

NILIF means Nothing In Life Is Free.

River is good with training thankfully. She is very smart and learns extremely fast. I am so thankful for that. It is only issues with the pack order. She has bitten me a few times when her aggression was worse. Lately things have been good and she has even allowed kaylee back in the bed with us(she use to go ballistic about it and would free out growling and snarling at me and Kaylee. It was horrible) She really has come a long way though.

Haha...duh, silly me!

BTW how is Flyball training going with River? I bet it's really fun, I looked into it a bit before I started Gizzy in Agility but could never find anything in my area.

sadly we had to stop. My mom could never take me to practice so we couldnt continue. I am hoping though once I am 16 and have my own car that we can start back up again. River will be three then and done with all her training so it might be better to wait anyways. I am still having some socializing problems with her also(extremely scared of men)

Oh, that's too bad!  Like you said though, it might be better to wait. I didn't start Gizzy in Agility till she was four and I think it made a huge difference, she was better trained and socialized and well over her silly puppy stage.
