[CIMDA (Canine Immune Medicated Disease Awareness) support] RE; J DODDS VACCINE PROTOCOLI would like to make you aware that all 27 veterinary schools in North America are in the process of changing their protocols for vaccinating dogs and cats. Some of this information will present an ethical & economic challenge to Vets, and there will be skeptics. Some organizations have come up with a political compromise suggesting vaccinations every 3 years to appease those who fear loss of income vs. those concerned about potential side effects. Politics, traditions, or the doctors economic well-being should not be a factor in a medical decision.NEW PRINCIPLES OF IMMUNOLOGY~Dogs and cats immune systems mature fully at 6 months. If a modified live virus vaccine is given after 6 months of age, it produces immunity, which is good for the life of the pet (i.e.: canine distemper, parvo, feline distemper). If another MLV vaccine is given a year later, the antibodies from the first vaccine neutralize the antigens of the second vaccine and there is little or no effect. The titer is not "boosted" nor are more memory cells induced. Not only are annual boosters for parvo and distemper unnecessary, they subject the pet to potential risks of allergic reactions and immune-mediated haemolytic anemia. There is no scientific documentation to back up label claims for annual administration of MLV vaccines. Puppies receive antibodies through their mothers milk. This natural protection can last 8 - 14 weeks. Puppies & kittens should NOT be vaccinated at LESS than 8 weeks. Maternal immunity will neutralize the vaccine and little protection (0-38%) will be produced. Vaccination at 6 weeks will, however, DELAY the timing of the first highly effective vaccine. Vaccinations given 2 weeks apart SUPPRESS rather than stimulate the immune system. A series of vaccinations is given starting at 8 weeks and given 3-4 weeks apart up to 16 weeks of age. Another vaccination given sometime after 6 months of age (usually at l year 4 mo) will provide LIFETIME IMMUNITY.>Click here< for a websitedetailing the new vaccination protocols.

I've been reading a lot about this lately, and when I lived in Canada, I owned a beautiful German Shepherd Collie mix. Right up until she was 10 yrs old she was vaccinated yearly, but once she reached 10 my vet said she felt there was no need to give her future vaccinations as she had had enough over the years and definitely had good immunity. She lived to be 15 yrs 8 months, never had anything but rabies in her last 5 1/2 years of life.

I'm becoming concerned about all these yearly vaccinations with Jake, I have read that these can actually cause some cancers in dogs, tumors at injection sites etc. I would really like to not have Jake vaccinated every year, but my vet put up a big stink over this (new vet, I now live in TX), and the boarding kennel I board him at said they will refuse to accept him if he is not vaccinated.

Do you believe that eventually it will come to pass that ALL vets will soon be given instruction that yearly vaccs are not needed?  It's definitely a big part of their income so I think it's going to be hard to get a lot of them to give up yearly vaccs.

I think that if veterinarians don't want to follow the new protocol, then they are likely to lose more than just the cost of yearly vaccinations, as some pet owners ... myself included, will switch vets before being strong armed into vaccinating our dogs because the vet needs to make a sale.

We usually give our puppies their first shots at 6wks old, but after reading this article ... and doing alot more research .... I have changed this litters first shots to 8wks old. I'll be taking this article to my vet to read and get his thoughts, on our next visit. He is pretty progressive, so I imagine he is already aware of the new protocol.

You know they make a huge profit on those vacinations.  The vacine itself is less than $10, and what do they charge now ... $50 - $70 or thereabouts?

Since the heartworm med has become a must,  you really need to be sensible about other unnecessary costs.  Our vet has been recommending every 3 years, but by the time these dogs are 4 years old, sounds like that recommendation should change!

The veterinary clinic we take Blue to is very good about the vaccines.  We only do the annual heartworm test and medicine and of course the required by State law annual rabies shot.   They have never tried to talk us into getting all those other ones on an annual basis.
