Sandy has a prolapsed gland of the third eyelid (cherry eye).  I've done TONS of research on the internet for this, and all suggest that we get it tucked (definitely NOT removed as this will cause problems with dry eye later in life).  All the articles I've read say that to prevent the third eyelid from becoming damaged from the dog pawing at it and it just generally being exposed, it should be surgically corrected. Our vet, however, says that it is a purely cosmetic procedure and it won't affect her eye health whatsoever.  Based on my research, I elected to have the "tucking" procedure done and she is scheduled for it next Friday.  So...the question is: what do ya'll think?  Is this a necessary procedure for her eye health or is it cosmetic and unnecessary in nature???

I have no clue either ... but, sounds like you really did your homework, and with your vet ... have made the best decision for Sandy. My prayers will be with her next Friday.

I had never heard of it either!!! One day, the corner of Sandy's eye was all red and swollen, so I took her to the vet.  I naively thought that she had gotten something in it.   The vet diagnosed it and said we should have the third eyelid removed. Well, that sent up a red flag because I know the third eyelid is important.  I wasn't really happy with that vet anyway because she had suggested some other things I wasn't quite on board with (this is a small town and I don't think she realizes there are people like me who do lots of research before we make a decision).  Anyway,  we went to this new vet who we like much more, but he seemed to downplay the importance of the procedure.  That's why I'm on the fence now.

Thanks, Peg!!!! I try to do what's best for my fur and step-skin kids.  It's amazing how selfless an incredibly SELFISH (me) person becomes when we love something more than we love ourselves!  I'm not by any means proclaiming that I'm a saint. I'm just surprised to see this other side of myself come out.  Weird!!!

I think it's great.  Amazing how God works in our lives.  Children and animals can either bring out our best or our very worst.

That is very true Peggy.

As far as the procedure goes, I've never heard of the condition, but it really sounds like you've checked stuff out.  Sandy will be in my prayers!

Thanks, guys!!! Our new vet said it's a very minor procedure, which makes me feel better.  She goes in in the morning and comes out that afternoon.  She has to wear the "cone" collar for a week or so,  and then she's all back to normal.  I'm not too upset about the fact that she's going thru the surgery.  I just want to make sure it's necessary.  I'm  committed to doing it because the consensus is that she will be better off for it.  I aprreciate your opinions, though.  Keep 'em  coming!!!

You know, it's got to be uncomfortable to have it there ... I bet just having it gone, will be a relief for her!

Thanks for the replies, guys!! I really do just want to do what's best for her.  The vet said it's a very minor surgery, so she'll only be there for the day.  BUT...next Friday will be a little worrisome for me and I'm sure slightly traumatic for Sandy, so be thinking of us!!!

Deborah, I dont know about Ratties and Chery Eye, but we used to have a Chow (Misha) and she had an eye problem that was common to Chow Chows called 'inverted eyelid' (not the medical term, but I dont remember what they call it) and it caused the top eyelid to turn outward at the corner, and made her eyes water and burn all the time.  We chose to have the surgery done to correct it---a very slight incision at the outer corners of her eyelids, and then just a stitch or two to close it.  It was well worth it.  She was so uncomfortable before, and her eyes were always so liquid-looking.  After the surgery  (btw, she healed quickly) she didnt have that runny eye problem and didnt rub at her eyes anymore.  Good luck with your surgery, Sandy.  Deborah, you will be glad you did it!

Thanks, Paul!!! That makes me feel better knowing someone has had a similar experience. Yeah, Sandy's affected eye does water quite a bit, so I'm hoping the procedure will help with that. I'm glad to know the recoverey should be speedy, too.
